Welcome back!
The best way to build lasting relationships and win people’s trust is to treat them with respect. Here are five things you should consider when building the relationship to success:
Always be early
If you are scheduled for an appointment or meeting, do not wait till the last minute to attend. In your daily schedule or planner, plan milestones on when you should be getting ready for an appointment. In other words, schedule your time so that you save what you are working on, start preparing materials that are needed for the meeting and start to make your way to the location. If you have to drive to a different location make sure that time is allowed for any delays that may occur. Keep in mind if you are wasting people’s time this is the quickest way to destroy the relationship if one has been built.
Always communicate
Communication is a vital part of success, make sure that you answer and return your phone calls. When people are speaking to you make sure that you listen carefully and completely. Make an interest about the other party before talking about you. While on the phone with others give all your attention to the conversation. Do not try and take care of other tasks such as reading or replying to emails. Only return phone calls when you are able to give 100% attention to the conversation. If you ignore other people not only is it rude but is very unprofessional.
Plan for projects
Always planning ahead will not only improve your relationship with others you will be admired. A good example is preparing for meetings, for example before you attend get all the facts together to ensure you know what is going on. During the process call the key attendees to hear their opinions and get suggestions on items that are on the agenda. To have other participates time to prepare and make the meeting a productive one send your agenda out far enough in advance for them to review. The key to being a successful leader is to conduct informative meetings, holding bad ones will show your inability to be a leader.
Being courteous
To build a successful relationship with others you will need to be courteous. You should compliment on others, avoid starting any rumors and never insult or make fun of other people. When speaking about what and how you expect ways of reaching the goals always use positive words. If you are rude to others you will find that your relationship is going down hill and will eventually be gone.
Being helpful
Whenever there are newcomers always be helpful and become a mentor for them so they will have someone to look up to. Get their viewpoints and share ideas, show them the people skills needed to help them be successful and work positively with each other. Find results that will be a win/win situation for both of you, make sure you let them speak first even if you are the subject matter expert. If you are selfish you will find yourself working harder because you have demolished the relationship with your peers. Work smarter not harder.
